AVONDALE, Arizona – February 20, 2014 – “I will” are two words that signify personal commitment, and that is what Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) wants to encourage with their current and future students.

The second annual Student Success Fair is designed to increase student comprehension of college requirements and connect them to the resources they need to graduate. With the theme “I will graduate,” the event’s purpose is to inspire students to personalize and “own” their individual completion goals.

The inaugural one-day event in 2013 was such a success that this year’s fair was expanded to two days, including a new evening session. Feedback from students and staff also encouraged that the event be open to current high school students and parents to help them understand all of the “student success” resources available at EMCC, and the evening College Success Fair was added.

The two-day fair kicks off Tuesday, March 4, with a day session from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event continues Wednesday, March 5, with a day session from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The new evening Open House sesssion, the College Success Fair, is from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. It will be held on at the EMCC campus grounds and courtyards, located at 3000 N. Dysart Rd. in Avondale. The Fair is free and open to the public.

Current and future students will have the opportunity to discover the tasks, deadlines and requirements for college completion including enrollment and registration, academic success strategies, student life and leadership opportunities, degree requirements, graduation deadlines, and more.

In a fun and festive atmosphere, future and current students are provided a “graduation passport” to guide them as they visit various tables and talk with staff, faculty and student representatives. After completing the passport, individuals receive a free, customizable EMCC T-shirt to declare their “I will graduate” date. Students keep their passport, which contains all the personalized information they collected from the fair, and use the information after the event as they progress toward graduation.

There will also be opportunities to sit-in on live classrooms, pose in a fun photo booth, earn prizes, and enjoy free food and music.

Included at the fair will also be the opportunity to learn about alternatives to college credit and degree pathways. The college will host an open house at which individuals can learn more about short-term job training programs at EMCC. These fast-track certificate programs offer technical training for individuals who want to enter the workforce with new skills in healthcare and industrial career fields.

“EMCC’s long-standing service strategy is ‘Your success is our success,’ and EMCC employees work together to help students achieve success,” said Dr. Ernie Lara, EMCC College President. “The Student Success Fair demonstrates our commitment to students and our dedication to providing an environment for student success.”
