AVONDALE, Arizona – On Wednesday, June 17, 2015, United States Deputy Secretary of Energy, Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall will visit Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) to host a roundtable discussion with leaders from across the state in the utility industry, academia, non-profit, workforce development and students pursuing a technical degree related to power generation and distribution.

The roundtable discussion will focus on President Obama’s Ready to Work Initiative, which seeks to prepare Americans for in-demand jobs. More specifically, representatives from the Arizona Sun Corridor- Get Into Energy Consortium (ASC-GIEC) will have an opportunity to share strategies implemented in Arizona which aim to enhance and balance the workforce demand of the utility industry, with educational output of qualified students.

Other topics will include opportunities for federal collaboration with community colleges and industry organizations to improve workforce development programs, as well initiatives that are currently underway at the Department of Energy.

“We look forward to the opportunity to share our experiences with the Department of Energy” said Dr. Clay Goodman, EMCC Vice President of Learning, and Director of the ASC-GIEC. “Part of the pride of EMCC is external collaboration that benefits our students and community. We are hopeful that this experience will further enhance our partnerships, and provide a workforce development framework for other state consortia nationwide.”

The roundtable discussion will take place in moderated panel form from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the North Community Room at the EMCC Avondale campus, located at 3000 North Dysart Road, Avondale, AZ. Attendance is limited to invited guests only.
