Estrella Mountain Community College Students Make the All-Arizona Academic Team

AVONDALE, Ariz. - Castonia Hardge and Patricia Gillem, Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) students, were named to the All-Arizona Academic Team, a state competition that recognizes the best and brightest community college students in the state. The All-Arizona Academic Team recognizes scholarly achievements of students from junior, technical and community colleges. Student selection is based on academic achievement, activities and leadership, service to the community and work experience. Students were nominated by faculty members and chosen through an application process that included submitting a 500-word essay about an educational experience that transformed their lives.

Castonia Hardge won placement on the second team. The 20-year-old education major and Surprise resident has aspirations of becoming a high school teacher. She currently interns at an Avondale junior high school assisting students with reading, writing and presentation skills. In 2001, she made the President's List and received special recognition for an intercultural presentation at EMCC's Intercultural Day. She plans to attend Arizona State University West to complete her teaching degree. This award has made it much easier for her to accomplish this goal. As an All-Arizona Academic Team scholar, Castonia receives a four-semester tuition waiver and a $750 scholarship award.

Patricia Gillem, third team, is a 48-year-old returning student. Prompted by a layoff after twenty years of service at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and the dissolution of a twenty-year marriage, Patricia turned to education to fill a new determination in her life. Her goal is to pursue a nursing career. For years, the Avondale resident committed to helping those in need and was the caretaker of her elderly parents until their passing. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Patricia actively volunteers with various homeless ministries and the elderly.

All-Arizona Team

Patricia is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, and president of the EMCC Black Student Union-a position she has held for the last two years. She plans to attend Arizona State University West, as well, and will receive a four-semester tuition waiver and a $500 scholarship. In addition, Patricia plans on using her summers to do missionary work in Africa. As a Christian, she intends to incorporate her faith with her nursing skills.

The two students were honored, along with 59 others at a luncheon held at Mesa Community College on Feb. 15. In total, 61 students from 19 Arizona community colleges were selected for representation on the All-Arizona Academic Team.
