Students Do Their Part To Help Others Get Hired

Small Group Communication students at Estrella Mountain are doing their part to help students at the SouthWest Skill Center get jobs. Their project, which promotes learning through community service, is called "SUCCESSfest" and will provide the students with interviewing techniques, self-esteem workshops, professional dressing tips and general etiquette for job seekers.

The project will culminate on Tuesday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, with presentations and role-playing performances in job interviewing and career goal setting. In addition, the students have been busy with a month-long clothing drive to collect professional business attire for the students, with hopes of increasing their chances of obtaining employment. Their goal is to provide each interested participant with a clothing ensemble. The newly acquired fashions will be modeled by a few of the recipients.

The need for the project arose from conversations with SouthWest Skill Center personnel. While the center provides hands-on training for immediate entry into the workforce, many of the students are entering the workforce for the first time or after a long absence, and are unfamiliar with current interviewing techniques and workplace etiquette, including proper dress. SUCESSfest will greatly enhance their hiring chances.
