Estrella Mountain Volunteers Make Charitable Giving a Priority, Set Records

January 9, 2006 - Through a variety of special events and other voluntary efforts among the employees and students of Estrella Mountain Community College, the 2005-2006 United Way Campaign earned a total donation of $62,234 toward a variety of charities, including the American Red Cross and local foundation Sharing Down Syndrome. The donations, obtained through both silent and e-Bay auctions, the sale of a car, an authentic Oktoberfest, golf tournament, and employee payroll deductions, set an all-time college record, and resulted in a 7% increase over last year's fundraising efforts. Employees and students of the college also participated in a variety of volunteer events such as the 2005 Buddy Walk sponsored by Sharing Down Syndrome, Race for the Cure, and other activities that gave college employees and students an opportunity to personally extend themselves in the service of the West Valley community. During a year that saw so many devastating natural disasters, employees and students still saw the vital need and import of giving on a local level to positive, community affirming organizations that effect an immediate change on the West Valley community. "I'm proud of my colleagues and of our students. They never hesitate to do everything they can to help those who most need it," said Christina Izaguirre, co-chair of the college's volunteer United Way committee. The college has supported Valley of the Sun United Way since its inception nearly fourteen years ago.Estrella Mountain Community College is located on Thomas and Dysart Roads in Avondale and offers transfer-ready academic courses and job-specific occupational training to more than 13,000 students annually. Estrella Mountain is part of the Maricopa County Community College District, one of the largest community college districts in the nation.
