FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR BRINGS WORLD PERSPECTIVE TO EMCC STUDENTS

December 18, 2006 - The Maricopa Community College District is hosting a Fulbright Scholar in Residence for the 2006-07 academic year. Dr. Zahra Tamouh has earned doctorate degrees from the University of Mohamed V and the Sorbonne in Paris, France and is a Professor, Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Department of History, Mohamed V University, Rabat, Morocco. During the spring semester, she will be a visiting scholar at Estrella Mountain Community College. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), makes this opportunity possible under a cooperative agreement with the United States Department of State, who administers the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals. Each year, the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends some 800 U.S. faculty and professionals to 140 countries to lecture, do research or participate in seminars, and some 800 foreign faculty come to the U.S. Throughout her career, Dr. Tamouh has developed many courses such as: colonization and decolonization in Africa, Muslim civilization, Islam in Africa, Islamic civilization emphasizing the role of trade on the construction of Muslim civilization and also the interdependence of different civilizations by focusing on the Persian heritage, the role of Greek open thinking and other influences on the construction and the spread of Muslim civilizations. She also participated in the creation and conducting of programs such as African Studies, History Unit on Morocco and Arab and Muslim countries from 1500 to 1900, Muslim Sudanic Kingdoms from X to XVI century, the Jihad Movement and the Islamic Political reforms in West and Central Africa on XIX century. Dr. Tamouh is also a Women and Human rights activist. She was a founder of Moroccan Women Magazine "8 March" and Moroccan Human Rights Organization. Dr. Tamouh will teach the following classes in spring 2007:-WST 100 Women and Society - Introduction to critical issues in women's studies.
