A Tribute for a Cause

November 27 - 29, 2007, Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), a Maricopa Community College, will celebrate World AIDS Day with a musical tribute by Musica Nova, and other events in honor of those who have died from AIDS and live with HIV, to bring AIDS awareness to the southwest valley community.

World AIDS Day will be celebrated worldwide on Saturday, December 1, 2007 with 'leadership' as its theme. Estrella Mountain has adopted the World AIDS Campaign theme for this year, and as leaders in the community, the college's faculty, staff and students, with support of community agencies and area professionals, will participate in a variety of events designed to create awareness for AIDS issues November 27-29. All events are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, November 27, EMCC will host a live musical performance by members of Musica Nova Orchestra with Carolyn Whitaker, soprano; and Warren Cohen, conductor; performing a selection of Broadway show tunes in the Plaza Gallery from 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Student singers, dancers and instrumentalists will also perform.

Tuesday's events in the outdoor Image Zone area from 8:30 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. include musical tributes in memory of people who lost their lives to AIDS, free HIV testing, and a silent auction which will occur during this timeframe. Proceeds from auction items will be donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding AIDS-related causes. Student-created posters and information tables addressing AIDS issues will also be on display. EMCC instructors Dr. Jean Pierce, Music Humanities, and Dr. Olga Tsoudis, Sociology, have organized this third annual World AIDS Day event for the campus. Event was made possible through a grant from EMCC International and Intercultural Education.
