Music in Our World: A Performance and Lecture Series to be Held at EMCC

Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), a Maricopa Community College, will host a multicultural presentation of live music and discussion April 9-10, 2008 at it's Avondale campus located at 3000 North Dysart Road, on the Northwest corner of Dysart and Thomas Roads. Three diverse programs will be presented highlighting various musical styles from around the world.

Wednesday, April 9; 11:00am - 12:00pm
"The 'Classical' Trumpet," featuring Jason Mosall - trumpet soloist and lecturer - will be held in the Estrella Mountain Plaza Gallery from 11:00am - 12:00pm. Mosall will perform and discuss compositions from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century style periods spanning four centuries. Works performed will be by composers from Western and Eastern Europe including Italy, Germany and Russia. The history of each piece will be presented as well as its social and cultural context enhanced by visual slides. Mosall will perform pieces for the piccolo trumpet, e-flat trumpet, b-flat trumpet, and the cornet.

Wednesday, April 9; 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Jason Mosall and Christian Carichner will present a global perspective on popular music styles and the multicultural influences that shaped their evolution during their lecture titled, "The Roots and Evolution of Popular Music," to be held in the Estrella Mountain Plaza Gallery from 12:00pm - 1:00pm. The brass duo (trumpet and tuba) will perform pieces stemming from the roots of American popular music, traceable from the blues through rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and funk styles. Afrobeat music from Africa and popular music from England will also be presented.

Thursday, April 10; 10:00am - 11:15am
A jazz trio performance and lecture titled, "Blues and Jazz: Origins and Traditions," will be held in Estrella Mountain's Plaza Gallery from 10:00am - 11:15am. Jason Mosall, Christian Carichner and Gabe Hall-Rodrigues will perform a variety of blues and jazz selections including Dixieland, swing and modern jazz styles. The history of jazz will be presented with emphasis on the multicultural influences on the evolution of jazz music, especially those from Europe and Africa. Musical elements of jazz music will be demonstrated including improvisation, syncopation and swing.Estrella Mountain's music humanities classes will participate in the events which are made possible with a grant from EMCC International and Intercultural Education.
