Fashion Club Puts on a Divine Show

According to Wikipedia, a deity is a postulated preternatural or supernatural being, who is always of significant power, worshipped, thought to be holy, divine, or sacred, held in high regard, and respected by human beings. Estrella Mountain Community College's student Fashion Club showcased their divine creations at "Deity," their fall 2008 fashion show on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, and the crowd of more than 100 faculty, staff and students who attended the show certainly held the designers in high regard and with great respect.

The EMCC Fashion Club consists of 15 Estrella Mountain students who are interested in all aspects of the fashion industry, from design, hair and makeup, to choreography and public relations. The fall fashion show was the third show the club had presented to the college campus, each having a different theme. This year, the theme was inspired by gods, goddesses and Greek mythology. As a challenge to the group, all fabrics were torn and tied instead of cut and sewn. "We choose a specific guideline for each show to challenge ourselves and push our creativity," said Jose Rios, EMCC student and Fashion Club member.

In addition to the unique way the clothes were designed, the club used fabrics with natural fibers since the fashion show was being held during the Green Evolution event, a pre-cursor to the Maricopa Community College District Student Conference to be held in April that will bring attention to the environment and green initiatives.

Four designers collaborated to create the 33 ensembles modeled by Fashion Club members, complete with masks. The students strutted their stuff down a runway created and choreographed by the Fashion Club. "The show was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it," said Jennifer Complot, EMCC student and Fashion Club member. "We are very proud of the work we've done."
