EMCC Hosts Community Celebration in Honor of Black History Month

Estrella Mountain Community College will host its annual Black History Month Celebration in partnership with the Southwest Black History Committee and the City of Avondale on Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. in the college's Ceremonial Plaza. The college is located at 3000 N. Dysart Road in Avondale.

The day will celebrate the African connection to many genres of music including jazz, dance, hip hop, gospel, and rhythm and blues. The Jimmie McElroy Band, Renaissance, Foresight, and many other renowned bands will perform. Tolleson High School students will perform a variety of dance styles along with a Brazilian dance troupe who will perform to African sounds and drumming. There will also be a host of vendors on campus who will offer a variety of ethnic dishes, hair braiding, and displays of African arts, clothing, and more. The college's Black Student Union will also host a raffle to raise funds for scholarships.
