Community Colleges Partner with CleanEdison

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) and Phoenix College (PC) have partnered with CleanEdison, a leading national green building consulting and education provider, to offer training programs in Energy Audit Training and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credentialing. These programs will prepare students to join the growing green energy sector. While the federal unemployment rate nears 10 percent, jobs in the green industry are booming nationally, resulting from the federal government's stimulus package which invested billions of dollars to support energy efficiency and job training in this industry.

The Energy Audit Training program certifies home inspectors, HVAC professionals, general contractors, home builders, engineers, and other construction professionals through the Building Performance Institute (BPI) as Certified BPI Building Analysts. These professionals understand that the relationship between all interconnected systems of a structure is key to its overall performance, efficiency, and durability. They are trained to quickly target, diagnose, and solve performance problems. With successful completion of CleanEdison's intensive five-day course on the college campus, students are prepared to enter the new green economy and fill the available jobs which are helping Americans become more energy efficient.

The LEED professional credentialing system encourages green building professionals to maintain and advance their knowledge and expertise. LEED Green Associates will have the knowledge to implement different ways of using less energy, water, and natural resources; creating less waste; and fostering a healthy and comfortable environment. The LEED AP credential will signify an advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices; it will also reflect the ability to specialize in a particular LEED Rating System. Students must have prior experience working on a LEED registered project to take the two-day course for this credential.

Both programs will be offered through the community college's Custom Workforce Training programs. Chandler Gilbert Community College will offer the Energy Audit Training September 14-18, 2009 and again in January 2010. CGCC will also offer the LEED certification course September 21-22, 2009 and again in January 2010 and May 2010. Estrella Mountain Community College will offer the Energy Audit Training October 12-16, 2009 and again in May 2010. EMCC will also offer the LEED certification course October 19-20, 2009. Phoenix College will offer the Energy Audit Training and LEED certification course in March 2010.

"We are thrilled to be offering such impactful training through our partnership with CleanEdison," said Ruth M. Romano Ed.D, Director of Workforce Development at CGCC. "Green industry jobs will play a critical role in our nation's economic recovery, so we are looking forward to providing students with the necessary tools that will enable them to take advantage of the available opportunities."

The cost for the Energy Audit Program is $1,595, which includes classroom training, field training, course materials, study materials, BPI application fees, written exam fee, and field exam fee. The cost for the LEED certification course is $595, which includes curriculum materials and handouts.
