On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, Estrella Mountain Community College held it's first annual Veteran's Day Celebration which included a flag raising by the United States Marine Color Guard, speeches delivered by veterans, and a large gathering of appreciative college faculty, staff and students. The event was sponsored by the college's Veteran's Services Office.

The morning began with an opening given by Eddie Zuleger, Estrella Mountain administration of justice faculty and widely-known war veteran. Having served in Vietnam, Zuleger often brings his experience to life while participating in a variety of college events and activities.

Following Zuleger's welcome, the college's president, Dr. Ernest Lara also discussed his experience in the military, having served in the United States Army. Lara talked about the importance of the GI Bill and that veterans should utilize this benefit to continue their education. Estrella Mountain Business Faculty, Dr. John Bradley echoed those sentiments telling audience members that had it not been for the GI Bill, he may not be where he is today.

Israel Espinoza, EMCC student and member of the college's inaugural Veteran's Club, recounted his experience serving in Iraq and earning a Purple Heart. He was shot in the chest, but survived. He is taking advantage of the GI Bill to get his degree from Estrella Mountain and is proud to say that while he might be behind his peers in education, he is far, far ahead in life experience and pride for his country.

Following the flag raising ceremony, participants moved inside to listen to student, veteran, and EMCC Veteran's Club Secretary, Irene Ashker, give a presentation about the Battle of Mogdishu and her experience in aeromedical evacuation. Participants also had to the opportunity to view Espinoza's Purple Heart and other military regalia while talking with veteran's wearing name tags adorned with "I'm a veteran. Ask me a question." To conclude the day's events, author and storyteller, Jim McCoy captured the audience with his presentation on Vietnam titled, "On the Other Side of the Wall."

The day's events were emotional for some, enlightening for others and enjoyable by all. Veteran's Day is a day of remembrance and appreciation of our country's military personnel and EMCC is proud to honor them this year and each year in the future.
