EMCC Hosts World AIDS Day Events

Estrella Mountain Community College will recognize World AIDS Day with a series of events to be held December 1-3, 2009.  Events include speakers, films and informative displays. Events are free and open to the public.

 
Tuesday, December 1, 2009
8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Tables and displays; Montezuma Courtyard
8:30 a.m. – Film: “A Closer Walk” on global epidemic; Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
10:00 a.m. – Film: “All of Us” on African American women and AIDS; CTL
11:30 a.m. – Speaker: Cory Boyette, EMCC student and AIDS advocate; CTL
 
Cory Boyette will share his personal story about living with HIV and answer questions.  Boyette is 20 years old and grew up in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.  In 2003, his family relocated to Phoenix where he joined the “1n10” youth council.  Diagnosed with HIV in 2006, he became active with Ryan White EMA board meetings, becoming a voting member of the Phoenix Ryan White EMA in January 2008.  He currently educates members of his peer group on HIV and safe sex practices.  He is currently attending college with an aspiration to receive a degree in political science.

11:30 a.m. – Speaker: RJ Shannon from the Arizona Department of Health; CTL
1:00 p.m. – Film: “Rent” on starving artists who strive with obstacles such as the AIDS epidemic.
 
RJ Shannon from the Arizona Health Department returns to EMCC to share information about HIV and AIDS.  She will present on December 3 at 11:30 a.m., but will also be available to answer questions December 1-3 in the Montezuma Courtyard.
