First Annual Native American Heritage Month Concludes

Estrella Mountain Community College hosted its first annual Native American Heritage Month celebration during the month of November. The events kicked off with performances by four-time worldwide hoop dancing champion, Derrick Davis; and Randy Kemp, a flutist who performed music inspired by his own life events and Native American Heritage. A variety of other events were held including a series of films and guest speakers, as well as a Native American Expo full of food, fun and educational activities. The month's events were accompanied by an art exhibition featuring Hopi artist and EMCC employee, Sheryl Susunkewa's acrylic and watercolor paintings. Susunkewa is an annual exhibitor at the S.W.A.I.A Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Litchfield Indian Fair in the West Valley; and the Heard Museum Indian Market in Phoenix.
