New Program Helps Students Help Others

According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than 26 million adults in the United States have chronic kidney disease.  This disease affects the kidney’s ability to remove wastes and extra fluids from the body among other critical functions.  Left untreated, kidney disease can cause failure of the kidney resulting in the need for dialysis.  Many people rely on dialysis to maintain life while waiting for a kidney transplant and spend hours upon hours receiving this treatment.  You can become a Dialysis Technician and support patients during one of the most difficult times in their lives through Estrella Mountain Community College’s Dialysis Technician program.

In this program, students will learn to operate kidney dialysis machines, prepare dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, maintain equipment, monitor and record patient vital signs, administer local anesthetics, and assess patients for any complications that may occur during the procedure.  Students will also be involved in the training of patients for in-home care, while providing emotional support to the patient.  Upon finishing the program, students will receive a Dialysis Technician certificate of completion.

Those interested in participating in this 60-hour program should call 623 535 2800 or visit www.estrellamountain.edu/community-education for class requirements and additional information.  Class begins on September 14.
