EMCC’s First Athletic Team Competes for the First Time

Seven Estrella Mountain Lions representing the college’s first athletic team to enter athletic competition for Estrella Mountain Community College, competed in the George Kyte Cross-Country Invitational in Flagstaff this past Saturday, September 4, 2010. 

Alyssa Fell and Jess Stewart ran in the 5,000 meter women’s race that included teams from the University of Arizona, University of Las Vegas (UNLV), Arizona State University (ASU), and host school, Northern Arizona University (NAU), along with Arizona Community College Athletics Conference (ACCAC) teams, Glendale Community College, Pima Community College, Central Arizona, and Scottsdale Community College. 

On the men’s side, David Rodrigo led a cohort of five Mountain Lions across the finish line helping Estrella Mountain finish 4th among six community colleges entered in the race.  Rodrigo was followed by Brad Rowley, Eli Nieto, Juan Olvera, and Charlie Fridrich. 

The next race for the men’s and women’s cross-country teams in their inaugural season is the Aztec Invitational in San Diego hosted by San Diego State University on Saturday, September 18, 2010.
