Former EMCC Student Invited to White House Education Summit

Albert Ojeda, who was an honors student at Estrella Mountain Community College before transferring to continue his education, has been invited to participate in the White House Summit on Community Colleges Oct. 5 in Washington, D.C.

Ojeda, who transferred to Arizona State University, will participate along with several community college officials and students from around the country. The first-ever summit was organized by Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden and a community college professor, at the request of President Obama, who has made community college education a focus of his administration.

While at Estrella Mountain, Ojeda compiled a record of achievement that included participation in the Maricopa Community Colleges’ Student Public Policy Forum, an academic program that provides an overview of local, state and national public policy making, and citizen influence and involvement.

Earlier this year, Ojeda participated in a meeting in Tempe led by Dr. Biden, during which she learned about the Maricopa to ASU Pathways Program, or MAPP, an innovative program created by the Maricopa Community Colleges and ASU to facilitate the ability of community college students to transfer to the university. Officials from the Maricopa Community Colleges and ASU also participated in the meeting.
