Estrella Mountain Community College honored United States Veterans on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, with a Flag Raising Ceremony, which included Veteran guest speakers as well as campus administration and faculty remarks, followed by a question and answer session, “Ask a Vet.”

The American Legion Post I Honor Guard raised the flags, paying special honor to the Multi-National Peace-Keeping Force of Beirut, Lebanon.  Following the flag raising, 87-year-old Helen Coy, World War II Veteran, rang a bell for each service member killed in Beirut, and for the recent Arizona soldiers that have died serving our country in Afghanistan.  The crowd repeated, “We Remember” after each name was read.

In addressing the group of approximately 100 students, faculty, staff, Veterans, and community members, Estrella Mountain President, Dr. Ernest Lara said, “To all of our Veterans, let me join everyone here in thanking you for your service and courage.”

Other guest speakers included David Carrasco, Commander American Legion Post I; Katherine Douglas, political science faculty; and Robert Cavan, EMCC coordinator of Veterans Services.
