EMCC events and display pay tribute to 9/11 10th Anniversary

9/11 Flag of Honor

The Office of Student Life and Leadership at Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) will be hosting a “9/11” 10th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony on Monday, September 12, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Estrella Hall Community Room on the campus of EMCC, located at 3000 N. Dysart Rd. in Avondale. The ceremony is free and open to the public and will include a video tribute, guest speaker and a candlelight vigil.

The EMCC Office of Veterans Services will pay tribute with a flag ceremony on Friday, September 9, at 8:45 a.m. at the campus flagpole. The American flag will be lowered and raised to half mast accompanied with the playing of Taps by the U .S. Marine Corps Color Guard from Bulk Fuel Company Charlie, commemorating the exact time (8:46:26) the first tower was attacked.  The office will also be displaying the “Flag of Honor” during the entire month of September in their offices located in Komatke Hall.

The “Flag of Honor” was inspired and designed by Connecticut resident John Michelotti to immortalize the individual victims that were killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and to create an enduring symbol of the human sacrifices. The flag contains the names of all those that perished in the World Trade Towers, the Pentagon, United flights 175 and 93, American flights 11 and 77, and the names of the fallen emergency services personnel.

In response to 9/11, September was named U.S. National Preparedness Month to increase awareness and preparedness for unexpected emergencies and disasters.  The Maricopa Emergency Management System (MEMS) Team at the Maricopa Community College District is recognizing and participating in promoting this message across its college campuses encouraging students, staff and the community to learn the three primary steps and prepare personal responsiveness plans.
