EMCC celebrates Women's History Month

Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), a Maricopa Community College, is celebrating Women’s History Month during the month of March. The theme this year is “Women Who Changed the World,” paying tribute to the generations of women who have impacted the course of women’s evolvement in society.

In addition to the month-long interactive campus art exhibits and the “Fresh & Clean/Grocery” drive for The New Life Center, there are a variety of events that will be held on the EMCC campus, located at 3000 North Dysart Road in Avondale, Arizona. The events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, March 21, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Center for Teaching and Learning

“Breaking Through the Ceiling:  A Women’s Rise to the Top”

A panel of influential women will share how they took control of their career, conquered barriers and broke through the glass ceiling.

Thursday, March 22, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Center for Teaching and Learning

Film Presentation and Discussion: Dreamworlds 3

Dreamworlds 3 – Desire, Sex and Power in Music Video, a film written and produced by Sut Jhally, examines the stories contemporary music videos tell about girls and women, and encourages viewers to consider how these narratives shape individual and cultural attitudes about sexuality. The film offers a unique and powerful tool for understanding both the continuing influence of music videos and how pop culture filters the identities of young men and women through a dangerously narrow set of myths about sexuality and gender. Jhally is a Professor of Communication at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Founder and Executive Director of the Media Education Foundation. He is one of the world's leading scholars looking at the role played by advertising and popular culture in the processes of social control and identity construction.

Wednesday, March 28, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Estrella Hall Community Room

EMCC Women’s Leadership Luncheon
