AVONDALE, Arizona –  Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) will be hosting their third annual Health Awareness and Career Expo on Wednesday, October 9, providing resources and opportunities for two healthy lifestyle issues – personal health and career development. The expo will be held on the EMCC campus, located at Dysart and Thomas Roads, from 9:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m., and is free and open to the public. Campus parking is also free.

“This event will showcase health career education programs offered at EMCC, but will also provide information on many other types of career fields,” says Leslie Keefer, assistant director of operations and administrative services at the SouthWest Skill Center, and event chair.

The career portion of the expo has been enhanced this year and will provide information and resources on local job and internship opportunities, career exploration assistance, and information on career and college programs. More than fifty vendor and exhibitors will be participating. Complete details and listings of vendors and events can be found on estrellamountain.edu/expo

Activities and resources for the health awareness portion of the event include free glucose and blood pressure checks, information on health and nutrition, disease prevention, emergency tips and preparedness, and medical certificate and degree programs leading to careers. Short learning sessions will be presented and facilitated by faculty, authors and industry experts on a variety of health topics. Fun fitness and exercise demonstrations will offer audience participation, including Kickboxing, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Booiaka.

The event will also feature two expert panel discussions. At 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., the “Health, Wealthy and Wise” panel will present experts discussing the relationship between wellness and healthcare costs, touching on the connection to new Affordable Care Act options. At 11:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m., the “Cyber Security: An Emerging Need” panel will present experts discussing current trends such as protection of personal information, fraud, national security, and career potential in the fields of Cyber Security.

“In today’s economy, we are all trying to improve and balance lives, including our families, health, work and education,” said Keefer.  “This free event is intended to be fun and enjoyable, while providing the resources and information that we can learn more about how to achieve a healthy lifestyle.”
