Three final candidates announced for EMCC VP of Student Affairs

AVONDALE, Arizona – Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), one of the ten colleges of the Maricopa County Community College District, will be holding three public forums for the open position of the Vice President of Student Affairs on October 10, 2013 in the Plaza Gallery on the campus. The forums are free and open to students, faculty, staff and community members, and are scheduled for 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Each of the forums will be designated to individually feature the three final candidates, allowing for a brief introduction, the candidate’s own presentation of qualifications, followed by a question and answer session. See bios below. The Thursday, October 10 forum schedule for the three final candidates is:

11:00 a.m. – Dr. Patricia Cardenas-Adame

The vice president’s role will include the leadership and oversight of all student affairs units, including the Dean of Student Affairs, Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Testing, New Student Orientation, Academic Advisement, Counseling, Student Life and Leadership, Student Recruitment and Outreach, Intercollegiate Athletics and Disability Services, and will serve as the Title IX Coordinator for the college. The position reports directly to the college president and works collaboratively as a member of the college executive leadership team to advance the strategic goals and objectives of the campus.

The open position of Vice President of Student Affairs was due to the recent retirement of Dr. Debbie Kushibab, who served a long, successful career of more than five years at EMCC, and nearly 25 years within MCCCD. The job was posted on June 24, 2013 and closed on August 16, 2013, and included a national search through various employment mediums.

Yira Brimage is currently the Vice President Student Services at Phoenix College, another of the MCCCD colleges, and serves as a member of the President’s cabinet and the College Leadership Team. She has three years of experience working at Phoenix College, and 10 years at Scottsdale Community College as Acting Vice President, Dean of Students and as the Associate Dean of Enrollment Management. Additionally, she has 13 years of experience working for Arizona State University in a variety of positions within Student Affairs. Brimage holds a Bachelor’s in Spanish from Arizona State University, a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University, and is currently working towards a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University, slated to graduate in May 2014. 9:00 Forum

Dr. Chemene Crawford recently served as the Interim Vice President of Student Affairs and Interim Vice President of Administrative Operations for the College of Southern Nevada. She holds a Baccalaureate degree in Organizational Behavior and a Master of Human Resources and Organization Development degree from the University of San Francisco, and a Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Crawford has been included in the latest publication of Who’s Who in Black Las Vegas. Dr. Patricia Cardenas-Adame has provided leadership and oversight for a wide range of enrollment and student support services, and served in upper level administrative positions including Dean of Student Services, Vice President of Student Affairs and Interim President. Her professional experiences include serving as Adjunct English Faculty, Writing Center Tutor, and Developmental Education Tutor. Dr. Cardenas-Adame holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Texas A&M, Kingsville, a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management from Emmanuel College, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration from Capella University. 11:00 Forum
