Programming includes exhibitions, art walks, and artist lectures
Art exhibitions on the EMCC campus offer the community multiple opportunities to see artwork in different mediums created by students, faculty, and guest artists. These exhibitions take place in the Performing Arts Center, and Estrella and Komatke halls, and are free and open to the public during regular campus hours. In addition to having the work on display, related events – like artist lectures and walk-and-talks, and printed material – give depth to this visual arts programming.
February’s highlights include a juried show of artwork by students from the Tolleson Union High School District; multiple schools are represented. This juried format gives these students a unique opportunity to participate in professional art world experience, allowing them to learn more about how to further pursue an artistic career after graduation. An award ceremony and reception for this exhibition take place on Feb. 15, 2017 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Phoenix artist Frederick Hodge shows a retrospective of work in display cases in Estrella and Komatke halls for Black History Month, and addresses attendees with a talk on Feb. 13.
Other exhibitions include Constance McBride in March for Women’s History Month, with sculptural work that outlines women’s issues throughout history. Also in March, the Performing Arts Center will feature artwork by EMCC students, exclusively.
April presents prolific painter Thuong Nguyen with large scale abstract paintings, for Asian Pacific Heritage Month, and in May through the summer, EMCC fine art faculty members showcase their creative talents in a multi-media exhibition.
