The Maricopa Community College District names "Maricopa Artists of Promise" each year, highlighting the exceptional artistry of community college students. Students are chosen based on their works in several different art forms including, visual art, choreography, creative writing, theatre, and music. The Artists of Promise gala performance and exhibition will be hosted at the Herberger Theatre on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., where these students will present their work and be honored publically for their achievement. This year, six Estrella Mountain Community College students were chosen as part of this honor - Shawn Nelson (photograph), Veronica Cantrell (photograph), Amber Rivera (acrylic painting), Darrel Troxel (watercolor painting), Diane Ulibarri (chalk on silk), and Shannon O'Connor (colored pencil). Shawn Nelson was chosen to participate in a nation-wide competition sponsored by the League for Innovation and will read his artists' statement at the event at the Herberger Theatre on April 30.
