“Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary;” Tuesday, September 21, 2010; 8:30 a.m.; Estrella Hall South Community Room

History Faculty, Pablo Landeros, will host a film and discussion on “Fear and Learning at Hoover Elementary,” on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 in the college’s Estrella Hall South Community Room.  This film addresses the impact of California’s 1994 approval of Proposition 187, which denied public education and health care to all undocumented immigrants.  Discussion following the film will examine the issues of immigration and education which ties into the contemporary political climate of Arizona.  For additional information, call Pablo Landeros at 623-935-8501. 

“Sugar;” Monday, September 27, 2010; 10:00 a.m.; Plaza Gallery

Counseling Faculty, Jason Martinez, will host a film and discussion on the film, “Sugar,” on Monday, September 27, 2010 in the college’s Plaza Gallery.  “Sugar” follows the story of a young man in the Dominican Republic, trained to play baseball in the American minor league baseball system.  Once selected to attend spring training in the United States, he experiences a culture shock and struggles to find a new sense of self outside of baseball, in a country foreign to him.  For additional information, call Jason Martinez at 623-935-8906.

“La Mission;” Monday, October 11, 2010; 10:00 a.m.; Plaza Gallery

Counseling Faculty, Jason Martinez, will host a film and discussion on “La Mission,” on Monday, October 11, 2010 in the college’s Plaza Gallery.  This film addresses machismo in the Latino community by following the story of Che Rivera, a powerful and respected Latino man in living in the Mission district of San Francisco.  His machismo is challenged when he discovers that his only son, Jes, is gay.  Discussion will address how the sexual identity of machismo Latino men affects their views toward homosexuality, religion and other socioeconomic factors.  For additional information, call Jason Martinez at 623-935-8906.
