EMCC Honors Students Shine at Expo and Tournament

Estrella Mountain Community College's Honors students have had a very successful culmination to their semester of hard work.  Close to 50 honors students showcased their academic and creative honors project at this year's Annual Research Expo on December 1, 2010 and their debate talents at the Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association (PSCFA) Fall Championship Tournament at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, California, on December 3-5, 2010.

The 2010 Honors Expo scholarship winners are as follows:

1st Place; Araceli Zamora; $500.00

The Role of Lactobacillus Acidophilus in Health and Disease”           

2nd Place; Rebekkah Goforth & Dorene Simpson-Longoria; $400.00*

“The Relationship between Perceived Religious Affiliation and the Perception of Effectiveness in Child Rearing”

3rd Place; Katherine Burns; $300.00

“Past the Politics: Arizona’s SB 1070   

4th Place; Michael Hans; $200.00

“Brazen Bail: The Injustices of the American Bail System                

5th Place; Alyssa Blackwell & Roxanna Ortiz; $100.00*

“The Relationship between Appearance and how one views the Self and Others”

More than 600 students representing both, community colleges and 4-year universities, attended the PSCFA Fall Championship Tournament at Mount San Antonio College; this was the first such competition for EMCC Communication students.

Students worked diligently this semester as part of Communication Honors projects and as part of the upcoming new Forensics (Speech and Debate) Club in preparation for this competition. Estrella Mountain Communication students Dan Singleton and Sasha Nakhjiri earned a gold medal (1st) in Rookie Parliamentary Debate.  These two students won 4 out of 4 debates with each debate on a different current issues (i.e. military cohesion (“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”), U.S. involvement with the China and the Korean crisis, etc). 

Joel Bradley and Dominic Carlos earned silver (3rd), which means they won 3 out of 4 debates. Overall speaking awards for this event were also earned by Dan Singleton and Dominic Carlos. Yadi Lara received a 6th place runner up medal for her speech on sex addiction. 

Students also participated in the community service event “Toys for Tots” drive as part of the tournament. 

Other participating EMCC students included: Yolanda Estrada, Sydney Hawkins, Judith Maciel, Celia Perez, and Nathaniel Sullivan.
