Dr. Ernest Lara, president of Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), announced that two EMCC students, Joshua Hodges and Justin Deknick, have received 2011 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Scholarships. Hodges, who earned a Silver Scholarship, will receive $1,250. Decknick, who earned a Bronze Scholarship, will receive $1,000. Both scholarships will be awarded in August.
The students became eligible for the national-level Coca-Cola scholarship competition in late February, when they were honored for their academic achievement as members of the All-Arizona Academic Team. The All-Arizona Academic Team recognizes scholarly achievements of students from junior, technical and community colleges. Honorees earn two-year tuition waivers from the Arizona Board of Regents, good at any public university.
Both Hodges and Decknick plan to transfer to Arizona State University. Hodges plans to pursue a Ph.D. and a career as a research psychologist; Decknick intends to pursue a J.D. degree and become an attorney.
