Grant-funded Maker Space includes beneficial equipment and technologies

Over the last decade, “maker spaces” have grown in popularity. These centers provide an assemblage of tools and technology-driven equipment that help designers bring their ideas to life. Now the EMCC campus has its own maker space, called the STEAM Engine. An open house is being held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on March 1, 2017 in Mariposa Hall, rooms 139 and 140.

Developed by Physics faculty emeritus, David Weaver, the addition of this creative center on campus gives students new ways to learn and interact, as well as teach and help one another. Some of the equipment currently available in the STEAM Engine include a large 3D printer, a laser cutter and etcher, a CNC mill, sewing machines, a vinyl cutter, and a dye sublimation printer. These and the other tools will lend towards innovative creations for projects in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The project was funded with grant support from the AZ Ramp Up program; a part of the Department of Labor.
