Dr. Rey Rivera, Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) Vice President of Learning, has been named an Aspen Presidential Fellow.

Dr. Rivera is one of only 40 exceptional leaders from across the nation to be accepted into the 2019-20 class of the Aspen Presidential Fellowship for Community College Excellence, a leadership program aimed at preparing the next generation of community college presidents to transform institutions to achieve higher and more equitable levels of student success, both in college and in the labor market.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected as an Aspen Presidential Fellow,” Dr. Rivera said.

The fellows will embark on a 10-month fellowship beginning in July 2019 when they will work with mentors — current and former community college presidents — who have achieved exceptional outcomes for students throughout their careers. They will also learn from national experts about ways to harness data to assess student success outcomes, strategies for internal change leadership, and how to create strong external partnerships with K-12 schools, four-year colleges, and employers.

“The program prepares community college leaders by challenging participants to think creatively and collaboratively on the unique challenges facing community colleges today,” Dr. Rivera said. “I look forward to representing EMCC and finding ways to better support our innovative faculty and staff as we prepare our students for the jobs of tomorrow.”
